Zipcar and Flexcar to merge

Zipcar and Flexcar, North America’s two biggest car-sharing services, have agreed to merge as a means of accelerating their expansion and responding to competition from conventional car-rental operators.

The combined group will have about 5,000 vehicles and 180,000 members. Zipcar set up in London this year as a possible prelude to creating the first pan-European car-sharing service.
