Declaring from his hospital bed that “love always defeats envy and hatred”, Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday issued his first public statement since he was struck on his face two days earlier by a statuette of Milan’s cathedral hurled by a mentally-ill man.
The Italian prime minister’s words were posted on the website of his People of Liberty party hours after his assailant, 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia, wrote a statement of apology from his prison cell for his “cowardly and impetuous” act.
