McCain and Obama clash over economy

John McCain and Barack Obama met on Tuesday night for their first televised debate since the campaign soured into a string of personal attacks from the rival campaigns about the past associations of the candidates.

Mr Obama, answering the first question on the toss of a coin, moved swiftly to attack the economic policies of the Bush administration that he said had been supported by Mr McCain. The financial crisis was “a final verdict on the failed economic policies of the past eight years”.
