Role of CPS is not ‘victims’ champion’

Government claims that state prosecutors will champion the rights of crime victims are a “damaging misrepresentation of reality” and risk expectations that will “inevitably be disappointed”, an inquiry into the Crown Prosecution Service has found.

MPs on the justice committee, which carried out the wide-reaching investigation into the role of the CPS, said it was crucial the body was seen as an “independent arbiter of decisions about prosecution” rather than a “victims’ champion”.
