Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, criticised the Pope on Tuesday for his controversial rehabilitation of a bishop who expressed doubts in a recent interview as to whether the Holocaust had really happened.
Ms Merkel, the daughter of a protestant pastor, said the Vatican should make clear “there cannot be any [Holocaust] denial and that there must, of course, be a positive relationship with Jews as a community ... I do not feel these clarifications have been clearly made yet.”
