Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, on Monday appealed for political reform in the Middle East, saying democracy in the region was “inevitable” and that “the fear of free choices can no longer justify the denial of liberty”.

Ms Rice was delivering a major policy speech before an invited audience of government officials, academics and other guests at theAmerican University in Cairo during a tour of the Middle East.
