Balfour Beatty is buying US consulting and engineering group Parsons Brinckerhoff for $626m (£380m), in what is set to be the largest acquisition in the construction group’s history.

The purchase, which Balfour will use to bolster its position in a US market that currently accounts for 24 per cent of its revenue, will be largely financed by a £353m rights issue.
