The $7.1bn offer for Puma, the German sports brands group, by PPR, the French luxury and retail operator, is a reminder that the ultimate value of any branded business is what a buyer will pay.

But unless brands are bought and sold continually, deal sizes are not a practical way to track and predict their valuations.
