Foreign policy differences hit Merkel coalition

New foreign policy differences emerged on Friday between Angela Merkel and Frank-Walter Steinmeier as the chancellor indicated she had opposed the foreign minister’s decision this week to welcome Syria’s top diplomatic envoy to Berlin.

Mr Steinmeier met Walid-al-Muallim, Syrian foreign minister, on Thursday, and said afterwards the talks were important in persuading Syria to play “a constructive role” in the Middle East peace process.
