There can be very much more to a watch than meets the eye. It can house secrets that are just about imaginable, rarely seen, and very expensive. Such items are categorised as erotic watches in sales catalogues, with prices "available on request" . . . not quite in the under-the-counter league, but often pretty close. And they are generally unsigned.

There are two kinds: static and moving. Both can be discovered by opening the back of a pocket or wristwatch, and opening a second caseback if necessary. Sometimes there is a tiny button to push, activating a spring. Beneath will be revealed an erotic scene of some kind. It will most likely be an exquisite miniature, no more than about 38mm across, highly detailed, in many bright colours, all applied to enamel with, it is said, the eyelashes of a badger.
