Merkel stages robust defence of crisis management

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, staged a robust defence of her government’s economic crisis-management on Wednesday amid mounting international criticism of Berlin’s apparent reluctance to tackle the coming recession head-on.

Yet the chancellor also left the door open to unspecified further action, saying the crisis was unprecedented and was not unfolding “according to an old script we could turn to.” She told parliament: “we cannot predict all future developments. This is true.”
