Transparency fears lead to review of Congo contracts

The Democratic Republic of Congo is set to review three of its biggest mining contracts after a World Bank report found they were approved with “a complete lack of transparency”.

The three contracts refer to deals approved in 2005 under a power-sharing government, which was seen by western diplomats as deeply corrupt, but necessary to put an end to war in a country central to the region’s stability. In spite of the reviews, no substantial changes are expected to the contracts.
