Pandit takes Citi into new territory

Vikram Pandit wants to cut a Netherlands-sized chunk of fat off Citigroup’s bloated and underperforming balance sheet.

Citi’s chief executive did not put it that way in a four-hour presentation to analysts, but his pledge to sell or wind down non-core assets worth some $500bn – roughly the value of Dutch GDP – was loud and clear.
