Repairing the deep hole in public finances will take years

So bad are the public finances, that a British peace-time government has never before planned to borrow so much.

The figures are enormous, however they are expressed. This financial year, the Treasury expects tax revenues to fall short of public expenditure by £175bn or 12.4 per cent of national income.
