Equities rattled by prospect of US rate hike

The prospect of further US interest rate rises continued to rattle global equity markets yesterday with European and Asian shares seeing particularly sharp sell-offs.

Comments from Ben Bernanke, the new US Federal Reserve chairman, late on Monday raising fresh concern over the inflationary outlook increased expectations that the central bank had not yet finished tightening monetary policy.
