Berlin open-minded on Blair as EU chief

Germany is leaving the door open for Tony Blair to become a candidate for the European Union presidency, but is not going so far as to offer public support for the former prime minister of the UK.

Berlin says there is no “anti-Blair pact” or plot among EU countries, of which it is the biggest, to prevent Mr Blair from becoming president, in spite of reports that Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, is at the heart of opposition to his candidature.
