France Telecom must repay state aid

The European Commission’s long and bitter battle against the French government over state aid granted to France Telecom came to a head on Tuesday, when Brussels ordered the company to repay benefits worth between €800m ($990m) and €1.1bn plus interest.

It is almost certain to be the biggest repayment the Commission has ever ordered. The French company said immediately it would appeal the decision, while the government in Paris voiced its regret.
