Human rights rifts mar Asean summit

South-east Asia’s ambitious drive for integration was marred by rifts over human rights, trade and politics on the first day of the region’s annual summit.

The leaders of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations were supposed to be celebrating the inauguration of its new human rights body. But five member states – Burma, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore – refused to meet the five individuals chosen by civil rights groups to represent their countries.
