Italians question political system

When local elections take place in Italy, political debate usually turns on how far the contests will test the popularity of the national government of the day.

But as up to 10.3m eligible voters prepare to cast ballots in the provincial and local elections on Sunday and Monday, much more profound questions are being asked about whether Italy’s political system itself is in serious trouble.
