Whips furious after Gurkha defeat

Furious Labour whips were blaming a bureaucratic blunder for the party’s humiliating defeat on Wednesday in the vote over the rights of Gurkhas to stay in the UK.

The result could have been avoided, according to many MPs. Instead, it was a black day for Gordon Brown, prime minister, as recriminations flew around the House of Commons.
