Canal widening generates national pride

For decades, the lush slopes of Paradise Hill, not far from Panama City, have been a picture of tranquillity.

The song of tropical birds carries on the warm air, the waters of the country’s inter-oceanic canal flow gently below and even the huge ships that pass by do so without fuss and with hardly any noise.
