Microsoft hires outside on Longhorn

Microsoft has taken the unusual step of hiring an outsider as product manager for the next generation of Windows for PCs, the company's most important new product for years.

Codenamed Longhorn, the software has suffered several delays and the company last year stripped out a core part of the planned new operating system to speed up its arrival.
