New backdating charge

A former chief financial officer of Mercury Interactive, the software maker bought by Hewlett-Packard two years ago, was yesterday charged by a federal grand jury with tax evasion in connection with stock options backdating.

The US attorney in the northern district of California said the indictment against Sharlene Abrams is the first case filed by that office in which an individual is being charged with tax violations related to an alleged backdating scheme.
