Public spending will be cut by £37bn ($57bn), the Institute for Fiscal Studies said on Tuesday – more than the amount the government warned would lead to deep cuts in services when it accused the Conservatives of planning a £35bn reduction at the last general election.
At the time, Alistair Darling, now chancellor, said the Conservative plans would produce cuts so large that “they could only be found from cutting deep into frontline public services”.
