UK equities surge as bank fears ease

UK shares staged a sharp rally this week, seeing their biggest gains of the year as equities around the globe surged on an easing of the worst fears about financial institutions.

The FTSE 100 finished the week 6 per cent higher at 3753.7 – its best week since the one ending January 2, when it was more than 8 per cent higher – driven by strong recoveries among the heavyweight banking, mining and insurance sectors.
