Schwab plays down hopes for Doha talks

Susan Schwab, the US trade representative, was on Tuesday set to play down expectations of a breakthrough in the Doha world trade talks despite calls from the EU for urgent face-to-face negotiations between ministers.

Ms Schwab instead sought to use a keynote speech on the future of the US trade agenda to reach out to Democrats in Congress in an effort to build a bipartisan consensus around thorny issues such as international labour standards.
