Brown focuses on ‘squeezed middle’

Gordon Brown will anno­unce plans on Wednesday to refocus his government on the plight of the middle classes, suggesting that this “insight” would form the basis of Labour’s election manifesto.

Mr Brown has previously listed many reasons for entering politics – ranging from tackling unemployment to alleviating poverty in Africa – but he has rarely been heard to talk so passionately about the concerns of what he calls “the squeezed middle”.
