If academic rigour, monetary policy experience and an affable personality were the only qualities needed in the Bank's next deputy governor, Charles Bean's promotion from his current post as chief economist would be inevitable.
An applied macroeconomist, he was an adviser to the Treasury throughout the 1990s before his appointment to the monetary policy committee in 2000. Fellow economists praise the clarity of recent speeches on the credit crisis, and say he is well respected in the City.
