Microsoft launched Windows Mobile 6.5, the latest version of its mobile phone operating system, this week along with a new online application store, Skymarket, and a publicity campaign designed to boost the Windows Mobile brand in the fast- changing smartphone market.
That market has changed dramatically in the 18 months since its predecessor, Windows Mobile 6.1, was released. Apple's iPhone and its App Store have helped ignite the smartphone market, Research in Motion has aimed BlackBerrys at consumers, and both Google and Palm have launched new smartphone operating systems - Android and WebOS respectively.
