Japan trade surplus up 35.2% in May

Japan’s trade surplus in May rose year-on-year for the first time in 17 months, buoyed by strong demand for Japanese products abroad.

Boosted by strong US demand for Japanese cars and China’s appetite for machinery, the Ministry of Finance said on Thursday that Japan’s trade surplus widened 35.2 per cent from a year earlier to Y384.9bn in May.
