Brown hints at scrapping Helmand troop cut

Gordon Brown on Thursday signalled he was scrapping plans to reduce troop levels in Afghanistan after the country’s presidential election.

In testy exchanges before a committee of senior MPs the prime minister defended charges that a shortage of helicopters was hampering British operations and costing lives. He dismissed criticisms of inadequate equipment as “unfortunate” and called on the Afghan government to pull its weight and send thousands more troops to Helmand.
