Fears for investors in draft hedge fund rules

Proposed pan-European regulation of hedge funds and private equity is being introduced on the back of a "vague, sweeping and inadequate" analysis of the problem, according to a report prepared for European lawmakers.

External consultants looking into the impact the legislation might have if passed in its original form say the proposed rules would raise compliance costs for alternative fund managers to a much greater extent than the European Commission's own assessment acknowledged.
