Intelligent roads: Several approaches to keeping streets clearer

A car journey in Singapore can be an odd experience. Traffic, which in most developed countries is subject to unpredictable starts and stops, tends to flow in the tropical city state as if some supernatural controller were smoothly running the cars at a steady speed.

In fact, at the busiest times of day, the unseen controller is the invisible hand of market mechanisms. Every car in Singapore is fitted with equipment that automatically charges the owner if the car drives beneath one of the city’s 61 electronic toll gates when charging is in force.
