Esperanza Aguirre, head of Madrid's regional government, can sleep easy at last. In her authorised biography, The President, which was published last week, Aguirre complains she has trouble making ends meet on her public servant's salary. Heating her mansion in central Madrid is a burden because "the ceilings are so high . . nightmare!" she is quoted as saying. But help is on the way. A new website, www.1europaraespe.es, is taking donations to help meet the costs that Aguirre's reported €8,000 a month salary does not cover. The website urges donors to give what they can "because tomorrow could be too late". Her citizens' generosity may be Esperanza's only hope.
