Behind the glossy reports, earnest words and extravagant website claims, one thing has been missing in the pharmaceutical industry's description of its contribution to make medicines available and affordable to the poor: any method of objectively quantifying and comparing companies' efforts.

But now Wim Leereveld, a former marketing consultant to the industry, has come up with a pioneering way to slice through the rhetoric and assess the realities of corporate responsibility.
