Italy output fall hits Berlusconi re-election bid

Italy suffered unexpectedly sharp falls in industrial output in September and October, deflating the centre-right government’s hopes of riding a wave of economic recovery to victory in next April’s general election.

Industrial production dropped at a month-on-month rate of 0.9 per cent in October and 1.3 per cent in September – the worst two consecutive months of Silvio Berlusconi’s premiership, official data showed on Tuesday.
