Coal mine crackdown ignites land grab fears

A year ago more than 1,000 people worked at the coal mine in Yungang, a town in China’s northern Shanxi province, but these days only a stray dog and a security guard remain on site.

The entrance to the mine has been sealed by a concrete wall that has become one of the more unusual symbols of China’s increasingly uneasy relationship between private business and the state.
