MPs demand rise in public spending

Alistair Darling, the chancellor, is facing calls from Labour backbenchers for a substantial increase in public spending to “pump-prime” the economy out of recession, in spite of the parlous state of public finances.

Many Labour MPs believe the £37bn partial nationalisation of the banks increases, rather than reduces, the case for higher spending on the public sector when Mr Darling makes his pre-Budget report next month.
