Public finances provided Gordon Brown with some respite from his political problems on Tuesday as February’s public borrowing figures were lower than expected but the figures showed he is still set to miss some key forecasts.
Wednesday’s Budget is expected to be the seventh in a row that he has had to admit borrowing is higher than he had hoped, as experts predicted he would miss his target for the current budget deficit – the difference between revenues and day-to-day expenditure.
