Mexican economy heads for recession

Mexico’s government confirmed on Friday that the country was heading towards recession after it announced a 1.6 per cent contraction of the economy in the last quarter of 2008.

It was the first quarterly contraction for six years. The government thought until late last year that Mexico might pull through the crisis relatively unscathed, thanks to internal demand, infrastructure schemes and job-protection measures.
