Digging for votes among Mumbai’s neglected poor

In recent weeks, the 50-60 per cent of Mumbai’s residents who live in slums have found the city’s local politicians suddenly receptive to demands that only a few months ago they would have ignored.

Water pipes have been connected and toilets have been built in the hopelessly overcrowded neighbourhoods, while biryani rice curry has been distributed free.
