Airline industry plans 50% cut in emissions

The airline industry on Tuesday became the first sector to announced a global plan to cut carbon emissions, in a sign of intensifying pressures on business to offer initiatives in advance of December’s climate change summit in Copenhagen.

The International Air Transport Association, the global airline trade body, said its members had agreed to cut net emissions by 50 per cent from 2005 levels by 2050 – a target that drew mixed responses from environmentalists and business analysts.
