Card spending to overtake cash for first time

Consumers will spend more money with plastic cards than cash for the first time this year as the number of card users climbs steadily.

Shoppers are expected to charge £269bn worth of purchases to their debit and credit cards in 2004, according to Apacs, the payments association, while cash purchases are likely to amount to £268bn.
