Osborne makes key spending pledge

The Conservative party vowed on Monday to match the government’s spending target in its next election manifesto, underlining David Cameron’s effort to modernise the party with a symbolically important promise.

In an echo of the New Labour pledge to stick to Tory spending plans in 1997, George Osborne, shadow chancellor, wrote in an article in The Times that the party “will not be offering any unfunded spending ­commitments”.
