London mayor in Scotland Yard row

Boris Johnson, London’s mayor, has been accused of treating the police as a “political football” after his deputy claimed City Hall had taken over control of Scotland Yard from the Home Office.

The comments will reopen the wounds left by Mr Johnson last year when he forced the resignation of Sir Ian Blair, the former Metropolitan Police commissioner, even though the post is meant to be directly answerable to the home secretary.
