China should remove state subsidies that give their exporters an unfair advantage, Peter Mandelson, the EU Trade Commissioner, said on Tuesday in urging Beijing to play a more active role in the management of the global economy.

Mr Mandelson, in a speech at a university in the Chinese capital, said it was “no longer possible for China to shut out the world or behave as if it were outside the system looking in”.
