The chief executive of Filtronic, the wireless telecoms equipment maker, resigned on Monday after the company reported an unexpectedly large loss for the first half, sending its shares down more than 30 per cent.

John Roulston, chief executive, will be replaced by chairman David Rhodes. Rhys Williams, the senior non-executive director, will become chairman on a temporary basis.
