Banks led a bounce in European stock markets on Wednesday as short-covering by hedge funds underpinned gains.

The pan-European FTSE Eurofirst 300 recovered Tuesday’s losses, rising 1.7 per cent to 1,181.19, with some of Tuesday’s worst losers in the banking sector topping the leaderboard.
