Emerging markets’ resilience tested

Financial infernos in the developing world are usually episodes of spontaneous local combustion: the Mexican “tequila crisis” of 1994-5; the Asian and Russian financial crises of 1997-8; and Argentina’s debt default of 2001.

But the firestorms that swept emerging market assets this week leapt across from the crises burning in Europe and the US.
