Germany moves to redefine unemployment

A change in the legal definition of unemployment headed for approval in parliament on Friday could leave the German government open to accusations of statistics manipulation, the Federal Labour Agency warned.

The change, a footnote in a much-discussed bill to raise unemployment benefits for older jobseekers, would allow the Agency’s placement staff to exclude from its total unemployment figures any jobseeker over 58-years old who has not received a job offer for more than 12 months.
